Did you know that a very busy hurricane season is predicted for this year?
Every year, the Colorado State University’s tropical meteorological project team forecasts the upcoming hurricane season. For this year, they are predicting 23 storms, 11 of which will become hurricanes and five that will reach a category 3 or stronger.
One of the tools that researchers use to predict hurricane numbers and strengths is the Atlantic Ocean temperatures. The month of March marked the 12th month in a row where water temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean were at record warmth for this time of year.
Recently, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that Florida prepares for every hurricane season. He also praised storm preparation efforts, including better construction to withstand storm winds.
The Florida Legigislature last month approved a tax package (HB 7073) that includes two sales-tax “holidays.” During those holidays, Floridians will be able to avoid paying taxes on hurricane preparedness supplies ranging for generators, flashlights, to batteries. The first 14-day holiday will coincide with the beginning of hurricane season, and the second holiday is scheduled for August 24th-Sepetmber 6th, which is just ahead of peak hurricane season.
With just over one month from the beginning of hurricane season, many government officials as well as community leaders are advising Floridians to begin to prepare now as we may see a record number of storms across our state during 2024
